Mowing Time Calculator: How Long to Mow Your Lawn
Quick answer
One acre of open lawn takes about 2 hours 20 minutes with a 21 inch self-propelled mower, about 46 minutes with a 42 inch lawn tractor and about 25 minutes with a 54 inch zero-turn. Hills add about a quarter and yards full of trees and beds about a third, and a season of weekly mowing multiplies each figure by 25 to 30.
Mowing time comes down to three numbers: how much grass, how wide the deck cuts and how fast you can drive or walk while cutting. Enter them below with your terrain and the calculator estimates time per mow, hours per season and how much time a wider or faster mower would save. If you are shopping, the mower deck size calculator works the problem in reverse, from the time you want to spend to the deck you need.

How many hours a year does mowing take?
| Lawn and mower | Per mow | 26 mows a season | 32 mows a season |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.25 acres, 21 in at 3 mph | 35 min | 15 hr | 18.5 hr |
| 0.5 acres, 42 in at 4.5 mph | 23 min | 10 hr | 12.3 hr |
| 1 acre, 42 in at 4.5 mph | 46 min | 20 hr | 24.6 hr |
| 1 acre, 54 in at 6.5 mph | 25 min | 10.8 hr | 13.3 hr |
| 2 acres, 54 in at 6.5 mph | 50 min | 21.6 hr | 26.5 hr |
| 3 acres, 60 in at 6.5 mph | 1 hr 7 min | 29.1 hr | 35.8 hr |
How is mowing time calculated?
- Effective width = deck width in inches x 0.85 / 12, in feet, because each pass overlaps the last by about 15 percent
- Acres per hour = cutting speed in mph x 5,280 x effective width x efficiency / 43,560
- Minutes per mow = acres / acres per hour x 60
Efficiency covers everything that is not a straight cutting pass: turning at the end of each row, backing out of corners, slowing around trees, emptying the bagger. The calculator uses 0.80 for open lawn, 0.65 for hills where you slow down, and 0.60 for yards crowded with trees and beds. Bagging typically adds another 10 to 20 percent for emptying stops, which the calculator applies when you select it. Cutting speed is not top speed: residential zero-turns often list top speeds of 7 to 8 mph, but a clean cut in normal grass usually happens closer to 5 to 7 mph.
How much time does a bigger mower save?
Going from a walk-behind to a rider saves the most. On a 1 acre lawn, a 42 inch lawn tractor cuts weekly mowing from about 2 hours 20 minutes to about 46 minutes, which over a 26 mow season is roughly 40 hours back. Going from a 42 inch tractor to a 54 inch zero-turn saves another 20 minutes a week, about 9 hours a season. Past that, returns shrink: a 60 inch deck on 1 acre saves only a couple of minutes over a 54 and costs more, weighs more and needs a wider gate. The Husqvarna TS 120 42 in. Lawn Tractor ($2,799.00) is the common first rider for about 1 acre, the Husqvarna Z254F 54 in. Zero Turn Mower the usual step to a 54 inch zero-turn for 2 to 4 acres, and the EGO POWER+ Z6 ZT4204L 42 in. Electric Zero Turn Mower the battery option up to about 2 acres. Compare the two big-lawn types in zero-turn vs lawn tractor.
Does mowing speed affect cut quality?
Yes. Going too fast in thick or wet grass leaves uneven strips and clumps because the blades cannot lift and cut every blade before the deck moves on. Most operator manuals recommend slowing down in tall or wet grass and raising the deck rather than removing more than a third of the blade in one mow. Sharp blades matter as much as speed: a dull blade tears grass, which browns the tips and slows the whole job. Blades for common decks, such as the Husqvarna 48 in. Mulching Blades (3 Pack), cost far less than the fuel and time lost to a poor cut.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to mow 2 acres with a zero turn?
With a 54 inch zero-turn at a typical 6.5 mph cutting speed, 2 acres of open lawn takes about 50 minutes. A 48 inch deck takes about 56 minutes and a 42 inch deck about 64 minutes. Trees, beds and slopes can add 20 to 50 percent, so plan on 60 to 75 minutes for a typical 2 acre yard with some obstacles.
How long does it take to mow a half acre with a push mower?
A 21 inch self-propelled mower at about 3 mph mows a half acre of open lawn in roughly 70 minutes, and a push mower at 2.5 mph takes closer to 85 minutes. Add time for trimming and bagging. That is why many owners of half acre lots move up to a 30 to 42 inch rider, which cuts the same lawn in about 20 to 25 minutes.
How long does it take to mow a quarter acre?
A quarter acre is 10,890 square feet. With a 21 inch self-propelled mower it takes about 35 minutes of cutting on open lawn, and about 40 minutes with a push mower. Obstacles like beds, trees and play equipment can push it closer to an hour. Most battery walk-behinds can mow a quarter acre on a single larger battery.
Is a zero turn faster than a lawn tractor?
Yes, typically 30 to 45 percent faster on the same deck width, because zero-turns cut at higher ground speeds and turn in place at row ends. A 42 inch zero-turn mows an open acre in about 32 minutes versus about 46 for a 42 inch lawn tractor. On hills the advantage shrinks, and lawn tractors are the safer choice on slopes because they steer with their front wheels.
How many times a year do you mow a lawn?
Most lawns in active growth need weekly mowing, which works out to roughly 26 mows a year in northern regions with shorter seasons and 32 or more in warm southern climates. Growth slows in summer heat for cool-season grasses and in cooler weather for warm-season grasses. The practical rule is to mow often enough that you never remove more than a third of the grass blade at once.
