What we did not include: plastic mini-bulb strands sold as outdoor lights with thin cords and no published wind or listing information. They are cheap, but owners commonly report broken sockets and dead sections within a season when hung in open wind.

Measure each span you plan to hang, add about 10 percent for a gentle sag between anchors, then add the distance from the first anchor down to the outlet. Do not connect strands from different brands end to end.

Three feet between bulbs is the standard bistro spacing, and both Brightech Ambience Pro strands use it. At 3 ft, overhead strands 8 to 10 ft up give soft, even light over a table without glare. Closer spacing gives brighter, busier light; wider spacing looks sparse on short runs.

Brightness comes from bulb wattage and color temperature. LED Edison bulbs at about 2W each stay cool, draw very little power (a full 105 ft. Brightech strand is about 68W), and look warm at 2700K. A dimmer is the most useful upgrade because full brightness is often too much for dinner. The addlon includes a remote dimmer; the Brightech bulbs are dimmable with a separate outdoor plug-in dimmer. For hands-free on and off at dusk, add the Kasa EP40 smart plug.

Look for three things: an outdoor or wet-location listing on the strand, shatterproof bulbs, and a heavy cord. Brightech lists its WeatherTite rubberized cord for rain, snow and wind up to 50 MPH and uses UL-listed components on the 105 ft. strand. The addlon listing describes shatterproof bulbs and upgraded outdoor wiring but does not publish a wind or IP rating, so treat it as a lighter-duty strand.

IP (ingress protection) ratings, when published, describe how well a product resists dust and water: IP44 resists splashing, IP65 resists water jets, and IP67 survives temporary immersion. The Kasa EP40 is IP64, fine under an outdoor cover but not where it can sit in water. Whatever the rating, keep plug connections off the ground and pointed downward so water runs away from them.

String light cords are built to carry electricity and their own weight over short spans, not to be stretched tight across a patio. For any span longer than about 20 ft, anywhere wind hits the lights, or anywhere you want a crisp line, hang a separate guide wire and clip the lights to it.

1. Choose solid anchors. Use structural framing (a fascia board backed by rafters, a pergola beam or a deck post), posts set in concrete, or trees with non-damaging straps. Never use gutters or downspouts as anchors.
2. Run the guide wire. A thin galvanized or stainless steel cable tensioned with turnbuckles carries the load. A string light guide wire kit includes wire, turnbuckles and clips.
3. Attach the lights. Clip or zip-tie the strand's hanging loops to the wire at each bulb or every other bulb, leaving a little slack in the cord.
4. Add posts where there is no structure. String light poles set in weighted planters or ground sleeves create anchor points in open yards. Call 811 before digging post holes.
