Gutter Cleaning Guide: How Often, Ladders, Tools and Guards

Frequency depends on what grows over the roof. These are common guidance ranges from gutter makers and home maintenance references; adjust after watching how fast yours fill.

Watch the house in a steady rain. Signs your gutters need attention:

• Water spilling over the front or back edge of the gutter instead of out the downspouts.
• Little or no water coming out of a downspout during rain.
• Seedlings, grass or moss growing in the gutter.
• Sagging sections or gutters pulling away from the fascia under the weight of wet debris.
• Streaks or stains on siding below the gutter, and peeling paint or soft spots on fascia boards.
• Soil erosion, splash marks or pooling water along the foundation.
• Ice dams and large icicles along the eaves in winter.
• Birds, wasps or mosquitoes around the gutters, which like standing water and nesting debris.

For one-story homes and light debris, often yes, and it avoids the biggest risk in gutter cleaning. Ground-based options:

The limit of ground tools is seeing the result. A mirror or camera on a pole helps, and one careful ladder check a year confirms the gutters are really clear. Never use a pressure washer from a ladder or aim high-pressure water under shingles.

Measure from the ground to the gutter at the highest point you will clean. An extension ladder's usable length is shorter than its label because sections overlap, and it leans at an angle, so ladder makers publish sizing charts like this one. The ladder sizes shown reach the gutter with about 3 feet extending above it, which is the standard for climbing onto a roof and gives a handhold at the top.

A ladder's duty rating under the ANSI A14 ladder standards is the most weight it is designed to carry, and it includes the climber, clothing, tools, a bucket of wet debris and anything else on the ladder, not just body weight.

Choose fiberglass if there are any wires near the eaves. Aluminum ladders conduct electricity, and the service drop that feeds the house often attaches near a gutter line. Fiberglass ladders such as the Little Giant Dark Horse 2.0 M17 Fiberglass Multi-Position Ladder and Werner 32 ft. Fiberglass Extension Ladder, Type IA are nonconductive when clean and dry. Stay at least 10 feet away from overhead power lines, the minimum OSHA sets for unqualified workers, with any ladder.

• Extension ladders are the tool for two-story gutters. Pair them with a ladder stabilizer (standoff), which spans the gutter and rests on the roof or wall, so the ladder never leans on the gutter itself and you can reach the trough without leaning out.
• Levelers and feet: set the ladder on firm, level ground, using levelers rather than blocks or bricks under a leg.

Set up with the 4 to 1 rule: the base sits 1 foot out from the wall for every 4 feet of height to the support point. Keep three points of contact while climbing, keep your belt buckle between the rails, never stand above the highest standing level on the ladder label, and move the ladder rather than overreaching.

Downspouts clog at the top outlet and at elbows. With the gutter clear, run a garden hose into the top of the downspout. If water backs up, try these in order:

• Tap the downspout along its length to find the clog by sound, then squeeze or tap to loosen it.
• Flush from the bottom: push the hose up from the outlet with the water on to break the clog loose.
• Remove the bottom elbow (usually held by a couple of screws), clear it by hand and flush again.
• Use a drain auger such as a 25 ft drain auger fed from the top or bottom for packed clogs.
• Underground drain lines that downspouts connect to can clog far from the house; if water backs up only below ground level, a plumber with a camera may be needed.

For homes under trees, usually yes, because they turn ladder trips to scoop wet debris into lighter checks and brushing. They are not maintenance free. Before installing, check that the style fits your gutter width (5 or 6 inch) and hanger type, and read how it attaches: some slide under the first row of shingles, which some shingle warranties address, while others attach only to the gutter lip and fascia. Hire out when the height or the roof raises the risk beyond a simple one-story ladder job:

• Two-story or taller gutters, or any gutter you would reach from a roof rather than a ladder.
• Steep roofs, which should never be walked by homeowners, and any wet, icy or mossy roof.
• Service wires or power lines near the gutter run.
• Uneven ground, decks or landscaping that prevent a stable ladder setup.
• No second person available, or health, balance or mobility concerns.
• Sagging, leaking or detached gutters that need repair as well as cleaning.
