How is mower deck size calculated?
Deck width is measured across the cutting path, not the machine. The math behind the chart is short:
- Effective width in feet = deck inches x 0.85 / 12
- Acres per hour = mph x 5,280 x effective width x efficiency / 43,560
- Minutes to mow = acres / acres per hour x 60
Efficiency is 0.8 on open lawn, 0.65 on hills and 0.6 where there are many trees and beds. Speed is the other half of the answer: a 42 inch zero-turn at 6.5 mph cuts 1.88 acres an hour while a 42 inch lawn tractor at 4.5 mph cuts 1.30, the same deck and a 45 percent difference. Is a bigger mower deck always better?
No. Past about 54 inches the time saved shrinks while the cost, weight and storage footprint keep rising. On 1 acre, moving from a 42 inch tractor to a 54 inch zero-turn saves about 21 minutes a mow. Moving from 54 to 60 inches saves another 3 minutes. A wider deck also scalps more on uneven ground, because the deck spans humps and hollows that a narrower deck follows, and it needs a wider gate.

Will a 48 inch mower fit through my gate?
Check the overall width in the specifications, not the deck width. A mower is wider than its deck once tires, the discharge chute and the frame are counted, and the chute can often be folded up for storage and transport. Measure the narrowest gate on the route to the back yard, then compare it with the published overall width before buying.
Is a wider deck worse on bumpy ground?
It can be. A wide deck spans humps and hollows instead of following them, so it scalps high spots and leaves grass in dips. On uneven or rolling ground, a narrower deck, higher cut height and slower speed give a more even cut. Anti-scalp rollers help, but they do not remove the trade-off on genuinely rough ground.
