Greenworks CrossoverZ 42 Review: 60V Electric Zero Turn Pros, Cons

The CrossoverZ 42 is best at getting a flat 1 to 2.5 acre lawn onto battery power for the least money.

• Rated range per dollar. Up to 2.5 acres per charge, half an acre more than the pricier EGO POWER+ Z6 ZT4204L 42 in. Electric Zero Turn Mower.
• Consistent cut quality. Greenworks says the blades hold a constant 17,000 ft/min tip speed rather than slowing as a gas engine bogs, which helps leave an even cut.
• Utility features. A rear storage bin and front and rear attachment capability, unusual on an entry electric zero-turn, plus LED lights for early or late mowing.
• Platform value. The six 60V batteries run more than 75 other Greenworks 60V tools, so a string trimmer and blower can share them.
• Low noise. Greenworks rates it 4x quieter than gas.

At a realistic 6.5 mph mowing pace, the 42 inch deck covers about 1.9 acres per hour, so its rated 2.5 acres is roughly 1 hour 20 minutes of mowing.

The biggest drawback is what the listing leaves out. It does not state the recharge time, deck construction, cutting height range or warranty. EGO publishes a two hour recharge for its Z6; with six batteries and a 600W charger on the CrossoverZ, confirm the real recharge time in the manual before you count on a same-day second session.

The 8 mph headline also deserves context. That is a top mowing speed; on real lawns with bumps, trees and turns, most mowing happens slower, which is why our time estimates use 6.5 mph. And as with every zero-turn, steering and braking run through the rear wheels, so traction on wet or steep ground is limited.

• You want published recharge times and warranty terms before buying; the EGO POWER+ Z6 ZT4204L 42 in. Electric Zero Turn Mower listing states a two hour recharge.
• You mow steep or often wet slopes.
