Greenworks MaximusZ 54 Review: 3.5 Acre Electric Zero Turn

The MaximusZ 54 is best at doing a gas 54 inch zero-turn's job on 2 to 3.5 acres without fuel, oil or engine service.

• Rated range for real acreage. The mixed battery kit is rated for up to 3.5 acres depending on conditions, the most of any electric rider we cover.
• A heavy deck. A fabricated deck is welded from plate rather than pressed from sheet; this one is 10-gauge steel, the kind of deck usually found on gas mowers well above entry level.
• Load-sensing blades. Greenworks says SmartCut adapts to grass conditions to prevent bogging in thick or wet grass while holding a constant tip speed.
• Comfort and utility. An adjustable suspension seat with lumbar support and folding armrests, dual LED headlights, an LCD, 300 lb towing capacity and front and rear hitch capability.
• Warranty. A stated 4-year warranty.

At 6.5 mph the 54 inch deck covers about 2.4 acres per hour, so 3.5 acres is roughly 1 hour 27 minutes of mowing.

The biggest drawback is cost against a gas mower of the same width. The MaximusZ costs more than the gas Husqvarna Z254F 54 in. Zero Turn Mower, which also has a 54 inch fabricated deck and no range limit. You recover some of that in fuel and maintenance over years, but the payback depends on your mowing hours and energy prices.

The second drawback is that 3.5 acres is a conditions-dependent ceiling. Tall, wet or thick grass, bagging and slopes shorten range, and the listing does not state a full recharge time for the 1500W charger. If you mow more than 3.5 acres in one session, a gas mower remains the practical choice. Confirm, too, which of the included batteries fit Greenworks' handheld 60V tools; the listing states platform compatibility for the CrossoverZ's 8.0Ah packs but does not say whether the 20.0Ah suitcase batteries fit handheld tools.

• You want a welded 10-gauge deck and a suspension seat on a battery mower.
• You tow light loads, within its 300 lb capacity, around the property.
• A stated 4-year warranty matters to you.

Skip it if

• You mow more than 3.5 acres per session; a gas Husqvarna Z254F 54 in. Zero Turn Mower or Husqvarna MZ54 54 in. ClearCut Zero Turn Mower has no range limit.
• Your lawn is under 1.5 acres; the Greenworks 60V CrossoverZ 42 in. Electric Zero Turn Mower or EGO POWER+ Z6 ZT4204L 42 in. Electric Zero Turn Mower costs far less.
• You mow steep or wet slopes; no zero-turn suits them.
• You need heavy towing; a lawn tractor handles that better.

Warranty: the listing states a 4-year warranty. Ask Greenworks whether batteries and the charger share that term, what counts as commercial use, and whether registration is required, and keep proof of purchase.

Certification: no engine emissions certification applies to a battery mower. The listing does not state a UL, ETL or CSA listing, so look for a safety mark on the 1500W charger and battery labels and plug the charger into a circuit that meets the manual's requirements.
