How is the lime rate calculated?

The rate is pounds per 1,000 sq ft = (target pH minus current pH) x 10 x a texture factor, where the factor is about 4 pounds per tenth of a unit on sandy soil, 7 on loam and 10 on clay. Those factors reflect the common extension tables that list roughly 40, 70 and 100 pounds to raise sandy, loam and clay soils one full unit.

The calculator then caps each application at 50 pounds per 1,000 square feet and tells you how many applications to split the total into. A 5,000 square foot loam lawn going from 5.5 to 6.5 needs about 350 pounds, which is seven 50 pound bags and two separate applications several months apart. When is the best time to apply lime to a lawn?

Any time the ground is not frozen, but fall and early spring are the most practical. Lime reacts slowly: most of the movement happens over several months to a year, so do not retest for at least several months.
