Weber Spirit E-325 Review: 3-Burner Propane Grill Under $500

Doing the everyday job well for a long time at an entry price. The features that decide whether a cheap grill lasts are the cookbox, the grates and the warranty, and the Spirit E-325 is strong on all three. A cast-aluminum cookbox does not rust through the way thin painted steel does, porcelain-enameled cast-iron grates hold heat for good sear marks, and a 10-year limited warranty is long for a $499.00 grill.

The Boost Burners are the performance upgrade. Weber says they add 40 percent more power to the sear zone, so you can get one side of the grill very hot for steaks while keeping another side moderate for vegetables or chicken. Snap-Jet ignition lights each burner individually with one hand, which removes the fiddly push-button igniters that fail on budget grills.

For a family of four the three-burner layout covers direct and indirect cooking: burgers, chops and chicken over direct heat, and a whole chicken or ribs over an unlit burner with the lid closed.

Capacity and extras. Three burners are fine for a family but tight for parties of 10 or more, where you end up cooking in batches. There is no side burner, and Weber's listing does not state total BTU or cooking area, so you cannot compare grate space directly with the Nexgrill 4-burner, which lists four 12,000 BTU burners and a side burner for $399.00.

Accessories cost extra. The Weber Works rails accept snap-on bottle holders, tool hooks and lights, all sold separately, and a cover is not included. Weber's own Premium Spirit cover is cut for specific Spirit generations, so check its fit list against your grill before ordering, or measure and choose a universal cover such as the Unicook 58-inch.

If you already have a natural gas line, do not buy the propane version: the Spirit E-325 natural gas is built for it from the factory for $549.00.

Size a grill by how many people you feed at once and what you cook. A useful rule of thumb is about 72 to 100 sq in of primary grate per person for burgers and chops. Weber does not list the Spirit E-325's cooking area on Amazon, so check the spec sheet, then apply the rule:

• Couples and families of 2 to 4: any three-burner cart grill has room to spare.
• Families of 4 to 6: a three-burner grill works; use the warming rack for buns and sides.
• Parties of 10: expect to cook in two rounds, or step up to five burners and 570 sq in or more.
• Parties of 20: a six-burner twin-head such as the Broil King Regal S 690 or a 36-inch griddle.

The listing states a 10-year limited warranty. Limited warranties typically cover components for different periods, so read Weber's warranty statement for what each part gets and register the grill. Outdoor gas grills sold in the US and Canada are generally certified to the ANSI Z21.58/CSA 1.6 standard for outdoor cooking gas appliances; look for the CSA or ETL mark on the grill's rating plate before buying, especially from a third-party seller.
