Seasonal Lawn Care
Zone 8 Summer Lawn Care Calendar: What to Do and When
Quick answer
Summer is peak growth in zone 8. Mow bermuda and zoysia at 1 to 2 inches and St. Augustine at 3.5 to 4 inches, water about 1 to 1.25 inches a week in one or two soakings, and feed bermuda 0.5 to 1 pound of nitrogen every 4 to 6 weeks. Centipede gets none.
A zone 8 summer means mowing every five to seven days, humid nights that drive fungal disease, and the insect that does more damage to southern lawns than any other: the chinch bug. Warm-season turf is growing at its fastest, so summer is the season where feeding, watering and mowing decisions show up quickly, for better or worse.
Water is the first decision. The sprinkler zone calculator turns a bucket test into heads per zone and the run time for an inch of water, and the fertilizer calculator keeps each feeding at or under a pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet.

What does a zone 8 summer lawn care schedule look like?
Warm-season grass grows fastest when soil is 80 to 95 F, which is most of a zone 8 summer. Expect the mowing interval to shorten to five days on fed bermuda.
| Task | Trigger | Timing cue | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mow on a 5 to 7 day interval | Growth at full speed | All summer | Never remove more than one third of the blade in a cut |
| Feed bermuda and zoysia | Actively growing turf | Every 4 to 6 weeks | 0.5 to 1 lb N per 1,000 sq ft; zoysia at the low end |
| Feed St. Augustine | Actively growing turf | Every 6 to 8 weeks | 0.5 lb N; excess nitrogen feeds chinch bugs and disease |
| Leave centipede alone | Whole season | Whole season | 1 to 2 lb N a year total; iron for color instead |
| Deep watering | No rain for 5 to 7 days | All summer | 1 to 1.25 in per week in one or two before-dawn soakings |
| Chinch bug check | Soil above 70 F, hot dry sunny areas | Mid summer | Yellow then straw patches that spread, often along drives and walls |
| Disease watch | Humid nights above 68 F | Mid to late summer | Gray leaf spot on St. Augustine, dollar spot and brown patch elsewhere |
| Core aerate warm-season turf | Grass growing hard | Early summer | Recovery is fastest now; Brinly PA-42BH-A 42 in Tow-Behind Plug Aerator |
| Spot-treat nutsedge | Sedge outgrowing turf between mows | Early to mid summer | Sedgehammer Plus Turf Herbicide, 13.5 g Packet covers 1,000 sq ft per packet |
| Pause broadcast herbicide | Air above 85 to 90 F | Peak summer | Most labels prohibit it; spot-treat early in the morning instead |
Armyworms can strip a lawn in a day or two in late summer across zone 8. Look for a lawn edge that appears to be moving back overnight and check the thatch line.
How do I know if I have chinch bugs in my St. Augustine lawn?
Chinch bugs are small insects that feed on grass stems and inject a toxin, and they hit St. Augustine hardest in the hottest, sunniest, driest parts of the lawn, typically along driveways, sidewalks and south-facing walls. The damage looks like drought at first: yellowing that turns straw colored and spreads outward, and that does not recover when you water it. That last part is the tell.
The classic confirmation is to part the grass at the edge of a damaged area, where green meets yellow, and look at the soil surface for small moving insects. Extension offices also describe the coffee can flotation method, pressing a bottomless can into the turf and filling it with water so insects float up. Treat only if you find them, following the label, and keep in mind that heavy nitrogen and heavy thatch both make infestations worse. See the St. Augustinegrass page.
How much should I water a zone 8 lawn in summer?
Deep and infrequent trains roots downward. Frequent shallow watering keeps blades wet overnight, which is exactly what fungal disease wants in a humid zone 8 summer.
| Grass | Mowing height | Weekly water, including rain | Summer notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bermudagrass | 1 to 2 in | 1 to 1.25 in | Fastest growth and fastest recovery; needs the most nitrogen |
| Zoysiagrass | 1 to 2 in | 0.75 to 1 in | Dense and slow; thatch builds if over-fed |
| St. Augustinegrass | 3.5 to 4 in standard, 2 to 2.5 in dwarf | 1 to 1.25 in | Cut high; watch for chinch bugs and gray leaf spot |
| Centipedegrass | 1.5 to 2 in | 0.75 to 1 in | Low input by design; nitrogen causes centipede decline |
| Bahiagrass | 3 to 4 in | 0.75 to 1 in | Coarse and drought tolerant; seed heads need frequent mowing |
On the deep sands of the coastal plain, water often runs through the root zone before an inch is applied. Two half-inch sessions a week suit sand better than one long soak.
Can I put weed killer on my lawn in a zone 8 summer?
Spot treatment early in the morning, yes. Broadcast spraying in peak heat, no. Most selective lawn herbicide labels set a ceiling near 85 to 90 F, above which the turf takes more injury than the weed, and warm-season grass already under heat stress recovers slowly.
Product choice matters as much as timing here. BASF Drive XLR8 Crabgrass Killer Concentrate, 64 oz is a quinclorac post-emergent for crabgrass on many warm and cool-season lawns, but St. Augustine and bahia are not on that list, and Syngenta Tenacity Turf Herbicide, 8 oz is aimed at cool-season turf and bleaches warm-season grasses. Scotts Turf Builder Weed and Feed5, 33.95 lb excludes St. Augustine among other grasses. For nutsedge, which is not a broadleaf weed at all, Sedgehammer Plus Turf Herbicide, 13.5 g Packet or Ortho Nutsedge Killer for Lawns Ready-to-Spray, 32 oz are labeled for established turf. Details are on yellow nutsedge, dallisgrass and goosegrass.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I mow my lawn in zone 8 in summer?
Every five to seven days for fed bermuda, and every seven to ten days for zoysia, St. Augustine and centipede. The rule that matters more than the interval is to remove no more than one third of the blade height in a single cut, so a St. Augustine lawn held at 4 inches gets mowed before it passes 6 inches. Leave the clippings on the lawn.
Why is my St. Augustine turning yellow in summer?
Three common causes. Chinch bug damage starts in the hottest, sunniest strips and does not green up after watering. Iron deficiency shows as yellowing between green veins on new growth, common on alkaline or over-limed soil. Disease such as gray leaf spot appears as spotted lesions in humid weather. Part the turf at the damage edge and look before you buy any product.
Should I fertilize centipede grass in the summer?
Very little. Centipede needs only 1 to 2 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet a year, and pushing more causes the thatch buildup and dieback known as centipede decline. One light feeding of about half a pound in early summer is usually the whole program. If the color is pale, apply iron rather than nitrogen, and check that the soil pH has not been pushed above 6.0.
Can I water my lawn at night in zone 8?
Avoid it. Watering in the evening leaves blades wet through humid southern nights, which is the condition gray leaf spot, brown patch and dollar spot need. Water in the hours before dawn instead, so the lawn dries as the sun comes up. That timing also loses less water to evaporation and wind than a midday cycle, which matters during a dry stretch.
