Seasonal Lawn Care
Zone 8 Fall Lawn Care Calendar: What to Do and When
Quick answer
Zone 8 fall is about stopping, not starting. Finish nitrogen on warm-season turf 4 to 6 weeks before the average first frost, put down a fall pre-emergent as soil cools through 70 F to stop annual bluegrass and lawn burweed, and decide whether to overseed ryegrass for winter colour.
Warm-season lawns spend fall moving energy from leaves into roots, rhizomes and stolons, which is what gets them through a 10 to 20 F winter. Anything that pushes new top growth now, especially late nitrogen, works against that and leaves the lawn more likely to be damaged by a hard freeze.
Fall is also the last useful weed control window of the year, and the one most homeowners skip. The fertilizer calculator keeps any last feeding in bounds, the grass seed calculator sizes a ryegrass overseeding, and the lime calculator works out lime, which is best applied now so winter moisture can carry it in.

What does a zone 8 fall lawn care schedule look like?
The fall pre-emergent trigger is a falling soil temperature rather than a rising one: annual bluegrass and other winter annuals germinate as soil drops through about 70 F.
| Task | Trigger | Timing cue | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Last nitrogen of the year | 4 to 6 weeks before average first frost | Late summer to early fall | Later feeding pushes growth that winterkills |
| Potassium if a soil test calls for it | Same window | Early fall | Supports cold and stress tolerance; test first |
| Fall pre-emergent | Soil cooling through 70 F | Early fall | Lesco 0-0-7 with 0.43% Stonewall Pre-Emergent, 50 lb or Quali-Pro Prodiamine 65 WDG Pre-Emergent Herbicide, 5 lb |
| Overseed with ryegrass, if you want winter colour | Soil cooled to 65 to 70 F | Mid fall | Perennial ryegrass at 5 to 7 lb per 1,000 sq ft; not where pre-emergent went down |
| Seed tall fescue in upper zone 8 shade | Soil 50 to 65 F | Mid fall | 6 to 8 lb new, 3 to 4 lb overseeding per 1,000 sq ft |
| Broadleaf weed control | Weeds growing, air 60 to 80 F | Mid to late fall | The best window of the year; confirm your grass is on the label |
| Lime if the soil test calls for it | Any time the ground is workable | Mid to late fall | Winter moisture works it in; cap at 50 lb per 1,000 sq ft |
| Raise the mowing height slightly | Growth slowing | Late fall | A little extra leaf insulates crowns; do not scalp going into winter |
| Leaf and pine straw removal | Debris covering turf | Through fall | Dormant grass still needs light on warm days |
| Drop irrigation frequency | Cooler nights, slower growth | Late fall | Overwatering dormant turf invites disease |
Lawn burweed germinates in fall and is painless until it sets spiny burs in spring. A fall pre-emergent, or a post-emergent while the plants are small, is the only comfortable way to deal with it.
When should I stop fertilizing my lawn in zone 8?
Four to six weeks before the average first frost in your part of the zone. Nitrogen applied after that point produces soft, tender growth exactly when the grass should be hardening off, and that tissue is what a hard freeze kills. In upper zone 8, where winter lows reach 10 F, late feeding is a real risk to St. Augustine in particular.
Potassium is the exception, and only when a soil test supports it, since it is tied to cold and stress tolerance rather than top growth. Products marketed as winterizers vary: Scotts Turf Builder WinterGuard Fall Lawn Food, 32.3 lb and Espoma Turf-Tone Fall Winterizer 8-0-5, 30 lb are aimed mainly at cool-season lawns, which in zone 8 means a tall fescue lawn in the upper part of the zone, not your bermuda. A test such as the MySoil Soil Test Kit costs about the same as a bag of fertilizer and answers the question directly.
Should I overseed my lawn with ryegrass for winter in zone 8?
Overseeding puts temporary green cool-season grass over dormant warm-season turf. Plenty of zone 8 owners do it, and plenty deliberately do not. Both are defensible.
| Factor | Overseed | Do not overseed |
|---|---|---|
| Winter appearance | Green through the dormant months | Uniform straw brown |
| Seed rate and cost | Perennial ryegrass at 5 to 7 lb per 1,000 sq ft | None |
| Winter mowing | Continues every 10 to 14 days | Almost none |
| Winter water and feeding | Light irrigation plus a light feeding | None |
| Spring transition | Ryegrass shades and slows warm-season green-up | Green-up on the grass’s own schedule |
| Pre-emergent program | Cannot use a fall pre-emergent on overseeded areas | Normal fall and spring program |
| Best suited to | Bermuda lawns wanted green year round | St. Augustine, centipede and thin or shaded lawns |
Rates follow the perennial ryegrass figures in the grass seed calculator. Annual ryegrass is coarser and cheaper and dies out faster in spring heat; it is not in our rate table, so follow the bag.
What weeds should I treat in a zone 8 fall?
Winter annuals, and now rather than later. Annual bluegrass, lawn burweed, henbit and common chickweed all germinate as soil cools through about 70 F, sit small and unnoticed through winter, and take over in early spring. A fall pre-emergent such as Lesco 0-0-7 with 0.43% Stonewall Pre-Emergent, 50 lb stops them before they start, and Quali-Pro Prodiamine 65 WDG Pre-Emergent Herbicide, 5 lb does the same job through a sprayer for less per 1,000 square feet.
Fall is also the strongest window for perennial broadleaf weeds, because those plants are moving food down into their roots and carry herbicide with it. Use a product that names your grass, such as Ortho WeedClear Weed Killer for Lawns Concentrate, 1 gal or Spectracide Large Plot Weed Stop for Lawns Concentrate, 1 gal, and do not spray anywhere you have just overseeded. Weed pages worth reading first: annual bluegrass, lawn burweed and Virginia buttonweed.
What gear does a zone 8 fall need?
Debris removal and accurate spreading, plus a sprayer for the best weed window of the year. More in the best lawn sweepers.

Frequently asked questions
When should I stop fertilizing bermuda in zone 8?
Four to six weeks before the average first frost for your location. Nitrogen after that point pushes tender growth just as the grass should be hardening off and moving energy into roots and rhizomes, and that soft tissue is what a hard freeze damages. If a soil test shows a potassium shortfall, potassium is the one nutrient still worth applying in that window.
When should I put down fall pre-emergent in zone 8?
As soil temperature at 2 inches cools through about 70 F, which is earlier in the season than most people expect. Annual bluegrass, lawn burweed, henbit and chickweed all germinate around that point. Applying after they have sprouted does nothing, because a pre-emergent works only on germinating seed. Skip it anywhere you plan to overseed with ryegrass.
Can I overseed St. Augustine with ryegrass in winter?
It is generally discouraged. St. Augustine is a coarse, dense grass that does not tolerate the competition well, and ryegrass shades it during spring green-up, when it is already at its weakest. Bermuda handles overseeding much better because it spreads aggressively once warm. On St. Augustine, most owners accept a few dormant months rather than risk thinning the lawn.
Should I aerate my lawn in fall in zone 8?
Not warm-season turf. Bermuda, zoysia, St. Augustine and centipede all need to be growing hard to fill aeration holes, and in fall they are slowing toward dormancy, so the holes sit open all winter. Aerate those lawns in late spring to early summer instead. Only a cool-season tall fescue lawn in upper zone 8 should be aerated in early fall, right before overseeding.
