Pressure Washing
What PSI to Pressure Wash a Car (1,200 to 1,900 PSI)
Quick answer
Cars and trucks take 1,200 to 1,900 PSI and about 1.2 GPM with a 40 degree tip held 12 to 24 inches away, plus a foam cannon for soap. Electric washers in that range are ideal. A sedan works out to roughly 33 minutes at 1.2 GPM, an SUV about 43.
A car is the one surface on this site where the goal is not to blast anything. Paint, clear coat, badges, rubber seals and plastic trim all fail before dirt does at high pressure. What actually removes road film is dwell time with foam, followed by a gentle rinse and a contact wash with a wash mitt.
The settings here come from the same table the pressure washer PSI calculator uses, so the numbers match what the calculator returns for vehicles.

What PSI is safe to wash a car?
| Setting | Cars and trucks |
|---|---|
| Pressure | 1,200 to 1,900 PSI |
| Minimum flow | 1.2 GPM |
| Nozzle | 40 degree, foam cannon for soap |
| Distance from the surface | 12 to 24 in |
| Cleaning rate | About 5 sq ft per minute for each 1 GPM, the fastest surface on this site |
| Surface cleaner | No |
| Detergent | Car wash soap through a foam cannon, never a household degreaser |
| Watch for | Rubber seals, badges, chipped paint, tire sidewalls and anything already loose |
Keep the tip away from rubber seals, badges, chipped paint and tire sidewalls. Electric washers in the 1,200 to 1,900 PSI range are ideal for vehicles.
Which nozzle should I use to wash a car?
| Tip | Color | Use on a vehicle |
|---|---|---|
| 40 degree | White | The only tip for paint. Wide, gentle fan at 12 to 24 inches for pre-rinse and final rinse. |
| 65 degree or soap | Black | Low-pressure soap application if you do not have a foam cannon. |
| Foam cannon | n/a | Thick foam that clings and lifts road film. This is what does the cleaning, not pressure. |
The 0, 15 and 25 degree tips will strip paint, lift badges, cut into tire sidewalls and force water past door and window seals. A 0 degree tip is never used on a vehicle.
How long does it take to pressure wash a car?
Vehicle area here means the painted and glass surface you actually wash, not the footprint. A sedan runs roughly 200 square feet, a mid-size SUV about 260 and a full-size pickup about 300.
| Vehicle | 1.2 GPM | 1.4 GPM | 1.8 GPM |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sedan, about 200 sq ft | 33 min | 29 min | 22 min |
| Mid-size SUV, about 260 sq ft | 43 min | 37 min | 29 min |
| Full-size pickup, about 300 sq ft | 50 min | 43 min | 33 min |
| Two vehicles, about 600 sq ft | 100 min | 86 min | 67 min |
Minutes = area divided by (GPM x 5 square feet per minute per GPM), the same formula the pressure washer PSI calculator uses. Heavy staining, mildew and detergent dwell time add to every figure, and a pass with detergent plus a rinse pass doubles the wand time.
How do I wash a car with a pressure washer step by step?
- Park in the shade and cool the panels. Hot paint dries soap into spots before you can rinse. Wait until panels are cool to the touch.
- Pre-rinse top to bottom. With the 40 degree tip at 12 to 24 inches, rinse loose grit off before anything touches the paint. Most swirl marks come from dragging grit around.
- Foam the whole vehicle. Apply car wash soap through a foam cannon and let it dwell a few minutes without drying, so it lifts road film chemically.
- Contact wash with two buckets. Use a wash mitt with one bucket of soap and one of rinse water. The pressure washer cannot safely do this part, and it is where the car actually gets clean.
- Rinse and check the trouble spots. Rinse top to bottom, keeping the tip well back from seals, badges, antenna bases and any chipped paint.
- Dry before the water dries on the car. A drying towel or blower stops water spotting, especially with hard water. Pressure washing does not replace drying.
Can a pressure washer damage car paint?
Yes, in a couple of ways that are easy to avoid. Holding a narrow tip close will lift paint at a stone chip or an existing scratch, peel a badge or decal and pit a tire sidewall. Aiming into door shuts, window seals and the engine bay pushes water past gaskets and into electrical connectors.
The safe pattern is 40 degree tip, 12 to 24 inches, spray angled across a panel rather than straight into a seam, and foam doing the heavy lifting. A foam cannon is not in our catalog, so shop for a foam cannon with a quarter inch quick connect that matches your machine's fittings and rated flow. Frequently asked questions
What PSI is safe for washing a car?
About 1,200 to 1,900 PSI with a 40 degree tip held 12 to 24 inches from the panel. That is the range most electric washers sit in, which is why they suit vehicles. If your machine is rated higher, widen the tip and increase the distance, and keep the spray away from seals, badges, chipped paint and tire sidewalls.
Do I need a foam cannon to pressure wash a car?
Not strictly, but it is what makes the wash safe. Thick foam clings long enough to lift road film chemically, so grit is floated off before a mitt touches the paint. Without one you are relying on pressure to do the cleaning, which is exactly where paint damage starts. The black soap tip is the low-budget alternative.
Can I use a gas pressure washer on my car?
You can, carefully, but there is no advantage. Residential gas machines start around 2,800 PSI, well above the vehicle range, so you spend the whole wash managing pressure with wide tips and distance. Electric washers in the 1,200 to 1,900 PSI band are easier to control, quieter on a driveway and cheaper to own for this job.
Is pressure washing a car better than a car wash?
It is gentler than an older brush-style automatic wash, and you control the soap and the dwell time. It is not a complete wash on its own, because a pressure washer cannot safely make the contact pass that removes bonded road film. The usual method is pre-rinse, foam, hand wash with two buckets, rinse and dry.
